Easter

Children's Easter Egg Hunt in Elk City was held on Saturday March 31, at the ball park. There was lots of room for the bunny to hide the eggs. The park was all spruced up thanks to a group of volunteers. A big turnout of children attended and the weather was excellent for the event. Mr. Easter Bunny showed up during the affair, as he wanted to watch the children find his hidden eggs. A lot of new activities were included this year.

January

Here it is the middle of January, just getting the PRIDE newsletter printed and sent out as well as starting on the February letter. I’m usually half done with the next month letter by now. My old computer of 10 yr. finally gave out and crashed. Replaced it and one month later the hard drive crashed. Luckily I have a good computer fix it man and he had all my info backed up. All is good now, as long as this hard drive doesn’t crash. Daniel Boone lost his constant companion one day in January. He was out hunting armadillos and his dog Missy went exploring and ended up over the river bank unknown to him. After 12 hours of searching for her he finally found her stuck on the river bank. She was glad to see him and the feed bowl.  The discussion of the sale of skulls was a lively one morning between Daniel and Davy Crockett. They do have a time! Mike is getting ready to compete in a coyote calling contest with his partner. Follow up report: It was not a good day for coyote hunting end of report! A friend of his is ice fishing in the Dakotas. It’s only 27 below 0, we should all go and have fun. NOT!!! And in another corner of USA, daughter is paddle boarding on the bay! Now that is where we should be!

On Jan. 11th we went to Joeboy's Café and it was calm and 46 degrees, an hour later the wind from the north blew and as we drove home the temp dropped 10 degrees in 3 minutes!!! And kept on dropping. It was not a pleasant day. We are lucky the rain didn’t turn into any accumulation of ice or snow. It was fun this month to hear the reminiscing of the old stores on the main street. It amazes me how many stores were in a block! They talked about the Boars Nest behind the Warren gas station where the domino games were played and the horseshoe pit. As some of you notice that cross the bridge west of town, the county removed the asphalt from the surface of the bridge, stating it was too heavy for the bridge, but did they ever leave a BUMP for a couple weeks. Hope none of you lost your car in the BUMP, yes that is sarcasm, as it was much more than a bump, it felt like a crater when you forgot and hit it to fast! I was told they could put up speed limit signs so we would know to slow down! After all, there is a BUMP SIGN. They did come back and patch it up some, so now it is a BUMP!  So much flu and sickness this time of year. An area school even closed one day due to too much of the staff being ill and lack of substitutes.

SNOW, SNOW, SNOW… What a beautiful snow, but it’s so cold. Poor little calves that are born in this weather. The kitties, birds and chickens are extra hungry and I didn’t know they drank so much water until I have to take it to them several times a day! Hopefully this will be our winter and the weekend will bring the January thaw! Did you notice the beautiful sunsets of late? So many pretty pictures. And then we had a government shutdown. Dem or Rep, they all need to live in the real world.

Are you having a super bowl party? My team is not in it ! What I learned this month; make sure everything is backed up and you know how to get to the backup system. Ain’t technology grand.

February

Out my window I see the birds at the bird feeder, the wind blowing the top off my feeder, seems like wind blows all the time! Certainly, has been a cold winter so far for us, even the snow didn’t last long, but the ice didn’t accumulate! The wheat could sure use some moisture and the fire danger is high the first of the month, by the end we had more than enough moisture! A little rain goes along ways this time of the year. I feel sorry for all the animals during the cold rain and ice… wild, pets and farm. I’m so ready to play in the dirt and there’s still a month or more of winterish weather. Did your team win the Super Bowl?

So, how did your Valentine’s Day stack up in the world of Love? The average American spends $106 on flowers, candy, dinner or other ways of saying I love you and 73% of all flower sales are on V-day. My Love was good to me. I heard recently that Valentine’s Day is for the unmarried that are trying to get a Valentine, the married already have one and don’t need to celebrate. Do we really need a special day to be nice and say I Love You to our significant other or special people in our lives? 60 seemed so old when I was younger and now we’re all getting to that age (of my group) and it doesn’t seem that old at all. But alas, we lost some of our older friends and neighbors.

The Christian Church had a study on Revelation. What a Book of the Bible to try to understand?! Love Your God and Your Neighbor and you won’t have to worry about the Tribulation, because I don’t think any of us want to live through that! AMEN! The influenza has hit many people hard. Did the flu shot help? They say even if you did get the flu, having the shot lessened the severity. We stayed away from Joe for a week, didn’t want his germs! What I learned this month: People only remember us by the way we treat and speak to them.

March

I’m pretty sure March came in like a LION! The WIND was WILD! The wind seems to have blown more than usual, but we probably forget it was the same last year. My asparagus popped through, redbuds blooming, even a few strawberries were starting to bloom. The daffodils, tulips & fruit trees are in full bloom and very pretty, farmers are back in the fields spreading fertilizer and planting corn. Gardens are worked up and planted around town in anticipation of a bountiful harvest. The Mason Breakfast was back in full swing the 25th. It’s always good to gather, eat good food and visit with friends and neighbors and meet new people. Did you remember to spring ahead on March 11th for daylight savings time? . We had a few extra guys helping us celebrate at morning coffee. Daniel Boone is on the hunt, who knew there was such a market for Armadillos!

FIRE SEASON! Let’s not forget to appreciate the firefighters! These men and women are volunteers, fighting fire after working hours or the middle of the night and still go to work the next day. Anyone who intentionally starts a fire and then doesn’t stay around to watch it, should go to bed without supper and sleep in a smoke filled room! And the person that intentionally starts a fire on someone else’s property just because they are mean and ornery, should have a whole lot worse punishment. Fight the fire with spit! Was that nice? Didn’t feel very nice when my men were out there fighting fire so someone could joy ride around the county burning! The nice inch rain was welcomed to clear the air, put out the fires and help the wheat crop.

TECHNOLOGY! Did you notice that the last line of the page was on the top of the next page in the March newsletter! Somewhere in cyberspace the lines on the page sifted and when the email arrived at the printers, the lines weren’t on the right page and this is what happens in the world of technology. Have you ever tried to burn a video to a dvd, only to discover it only plays in your machine? What I learned this month: each machine is coded and if you don’t burn with the right code for the right machine it doesn’t play. Not to worry, just buy new software, buy a new program that burns the disc to several codes and then hope it works! th..th…tha. That’s all FOLKS!

The Good Old Days

The Elk City Globe (Elk City, Kansas) dated December 6th, 1883 editor W. C. Getty

Dissolution Notice dated Nov. 1, 1883 The copartnership existing between Dr. Woodring and Garrison for the last two years, is this day dissolved by mutual consent. We will continue to office together, where our books will be kept for settlement until the first of January 1884. All persons knowing themselves indebted to the firm or to either of us must settle the same either by cash or note without further notice. W. W. Woodring M.D. - A. J. Garrisgn M.D.

A general move around has been indulged by some of our merchants this week. Ferner sold out to start the ball and his buyers moved the stock into the corner brick, vacated by Kelly & Sewell the latter having disposed of part of their stock to Jerry Swatzel, who removed them into Dr. Woodring's building. John Wright removed his drugs into the building vacated by Ferner, and we have not yet heard who will occupy the room vacated by Wright

Mr. Ed Price has sold the two corner brick buildings to Mrs. Hose Serman.

Ewing & Co. have a fine street lamp and we hear will furnish several others for different ones around town.

S. N. West is engaged in taking the census of the city and says that he now has near 800 names, and is not done yet.

The award of a dollar premium was made for A. J. Davidson on last Monday. He having brought in the two heaviest ears of corn.

There will be a supper at the Card Creek school house, in Rutland township on next Wednesday evening, the proceeds to be given to the Sunday school.

If you want a bargain in farms or city property, call on the State Line Real Estate Agency. Two doors north of the bank, Elk City, Kansas

Garner & Ellington, the gentleman who purchased the grocery stock from G. W. Ferner, have removed their goods into the corner brick building, where they have much more commodious quarters. They seem to be well spoken gentlemen and we are glad to welcome them into our city, and we believe they will meet with a fair share of success.

J. J. Bagsley sold the building lately occupied by Ewing & Co to George Jamison, and we understand that Mr. J. sold it to Joe Avery. Such as the way property changes hands in Elk City.

Mr. Joe Avery took possession of the Eagle hotel Tuesday, and now prepared to feed the hungry, etc. We wish Mr. Avery abundant success in the business and doubt not he will receive it. as he declares his intention of keeping things in order so as to merit it.

Mrs. McVean has removed her Milliner shop into the north room of Pappe's new building, where she has things arranged in good shape. Pappe occupies the south room with his shoe shop, and Mr. Morgen has moved his family into the upstairs.
